Now that we are entering into the dusk of the year the new season of TV is well and truly upon us. Old favourites have returned and some new blood has joined the schedules in an attempt to warrant our time. There are probably five shows that I now watch regularly:

Fringe

Stargate Universe

Doll House

The Big Bang Theory

Flashpoint

The discussion on the above that follows may contain some spoliers – read only if you are up to date with each show…

Fringe

Probably my favourite show on television at the moment, although competition from Stargate Universe may quickly change that. JJ Abrams is a living legend, almost everything the guy has anything to do with I love. The cast are strong, Anna Torv playing the sexy female lead of an FBI agent who gets caught up with a new department investigating happenings referred to only as the pattern, Joshua Jackson as Peter Bishop in his most accomplished role to date as the son of super scientist Walter, and Walter Bishop himself played by John Noble, a key character responsible for many of the original experiments dealing with fringe science. The first season ended well and five episodes into the second things are progressing really well. The pace has picked up quite a bit for the second season and already we have some major character changes and all the preludes that we need for some epic story arcs to unfold. The show is currently on hold until November 5th.

Stargate Universe

I have never really been a fan of Stargate, I watched the original series simply because it starred Richard Dean Anderson but quickly lost interest. I didn’t hold much hope for SGU then, but I am surprised and delighted to say that it is quickly becoming one of my favourite shows. The production is much darker than anything that has gone before it and features some really great characters such as Robert Carlyle’s Nicholas Rush, the lead scientist of the show. There is a great sense of tension throughout the episodes and each is wonderfully paced, there is some fantastic dialogue and some of the FX shots have been pretty impressive. On top of that Elyse Levesque as Chloe Armstrong and Alaina Huffman as Tamara Johansen are very easy on the eye.

Doll House

Despite featuring the gorgeous Eliza Dushku I have been less than convinced by the start of season two of Doll House, the first season was great although something of a mixed bag, the later half being much superior to the early episodes. Here however things seem a little confused and the show has failed to grip me in the way I imagined it would. Perhaps it will progress as episodes unfold but with so many great shows now on air it needs to shape up fast.

The Big Bang Theory

Probably the only comedy show that I watch or have every really watched, TBBT is a modern comedy based around the lives of some super geek friends and the drop dead gorgeous girl next door that comes to live beside them. I think it’s seeing so many references to my own geek lifestyle in the show that sucked me in but I have to say that each week it brings some much needed comic relief.

Flashpoint

Another show that has really impressed me and fails to get the credit it deserves. Season 3 opened with a bang with one of the main characters getting killed off, with a new female taking up his role. The squad dynamics are still working well although I think they need to move some of the underlying character stories on a little more this season. Some great action sequences and well developed stories though.

I am already a few episodes into the new season of the shows above but would like to provide some further commentary on them either on the blog or in future episodes of the podcast. What are your favourite shows, what do you make of these? Let me know via a comment.
